SGI 1200 sideSAN JOSE, Calif., LinuxWorld Expo, Aug. 16 -- SGI recently supplied more than 200 SGI 1200 Linux OS based servers to Digital Dream Studio (DDS), one of the major digital game and animation makers in Korea. DDS will use these systems as rendering servers for its 3D animation film ARK, targeted for release in 2001.

The SGI 1200 server is a scalable, highly available, rack-optimized server delivering outstanding performance. Supporting up to two Pentium III processors, the SGI 1200 server is designed to support demanding applications as well as clusters of servers solving technical compute problems.

DDS required outstanding system performance and stability for its rendering servers to process large 3D graphics data in realtime, and SGI 1200 servers met its needs. As the rendering market requires low-cost, dense servers, SGI continues to develop these types of servers for rendering.

SGI 1200 front"We needed tremendous CPU power and large memory/disk capacity, usually available only from high-performance systems. SGI 1200 delivers the level of performance and scalability that we've been looking for," said Won Kim, Vice President of DDS. "Stability and performance of rendering servers are key to the success of 3D animation. SGI always leads the industry with its visualization technology, and this time its Linux solutions enable us to establish a stable and powerful rendering environment cost-effectively."

"As a company, SGI has been dedicated to providing the best Media Commerce solutions for creative users," said Yong-Dae Kim, Country Manager, SGI Korea. "We are very thrilled that SGI 1200 servers running Linux were selected as powerful rendering machines by DDS for production of its full 3D animation feature. It is significant that this is the first time ever in our local film/animation market that servers running in a Linux environment will be utilized for rendering. With its price/performance and stability, I expect our Linux-based systems will spread quickly into various applications across multiple industries."
