3D Graphics Cards for DCC

Intro, Why Accelerate?, What to Look For, PCI vs. AGP

Entry-Level, Low-Cost, High-Speed 3D Acceleration: Sub $300 Cards

Mid-Range, High-Speed 3D Acceleration: Sub $1000 Cards

High-End, Maximum 3D Acceleration: Cards Over $1,000

HP VISUALIZE-fx2+, -fx4+, and -fx6+, Intense3D Wildcat 4000, Intense3D Wildcat 4105, Intense3D Wildcat 4110, 3Dlabs Oxygen GVX210, 3Dlabs Oxygen GMX2000, ELSA GLoria XXL, Evans & Sutherland Tornado 3000

ELSA GLoria XXL

Based on the Glint GMX 1000 chipset, including 3Dlabs' Glint Gamma, and using an AGP interface, the Gloria XXL is built for high-end MCAD and animation.

It is capable of accelerating 3.3 million 25-pixel polygons per second with full geometry transformation, lighting calculations (16 lights supported in hardware), texture coordinate generation and high-quality fog calculation in hardware (trilinear MIP-mapping, anti-aliasing, fogging, overlay, stencil, alpha planes).

Users can work on power-hungry and texture-intensive 3D models in real-time without experiencing a geometry bottleneck.

The GLoria-XXL is perfected for 3D Studio MAX/VIZ (MAXtreme driver), Mechanical Desktop, SOFTIMAGE 3D, Pro/ENGINEER, Maya for Windows NT, I-DEAS, MicroStation 95, and many more. For 3D Studio MAX this provides the benefit of fast object editing and the horsepower to manipulate entire scenes.

Configured with a 16MB VRAM frame buffer and 24MB of EDO-RAM (expandable to 40MB), the GLoria-XXL provides 48-bit local buffer memory for 32-bit Z-buffering and texture mapping. This means up to 56MB of memory for intensive textures, and display resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 in true color. The GLoria-XXL's buffer interface enables simultaneous use of 3D features, including front and back buffering, stenciling, fast clear planing and graphics ID. The card also supports stereoscopic 3D imaging and 3D APIs including OpenGL, Heidi and Direct3D. Boot VGA Support is provided by PERMEDIA2 with 2MB SGRAM. The card also supports the VESA, DPMS, DDC2B, and DirectDraw standards. Its MSRP is $1999.
