computrace logoVANCOUVER, - Absolute Software Corporation today announced the introduction of "PC Asset Tracking", a new set of asset tracking features which enhance Computrace - the company's flagship computer tracking, monitoring and theft recovery solution.

"Computrace has been helping organizations reduce their PC losses by deterring theft and recovering missing PCs," says John Livingston, president and chief executive officer. He adds: "Now, with the addition of the asset tracking functionality, Computrace allows administrators to prevent loss and more effectively manage their PC assets."

PC Asset Tracking extends the functionality of Computrace by enabling the Computrace Tracking Agent to collect a wider range of data points from PCs. In addition to gathering location information such as originating phone number and IP address, Computrace now auto-discovers system status information, including e-mail address, operating system, hard drive size, and processor type and speed. As with the existing Computrace product, asset data is transmitted to the Computrace Monitoring Center over a phone or Internet connection and logged in a secure database. With this new feature set, Absolute will also introduce a completely revamped web site and online Monitoring Center to better serve the needs of its customers.

"Computer loss is not always caused by criminal actions. Very often organizations are unable to effectively manage their PC assets because they don't have appropriate tools or simply don't have the time," Livingston continues. "Losing track of PCs can be very costly when you consider the hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in computer hardware and data."

With its new PC Asset Tracking features, the Computrace Tracking Agent automatically picks up crucial computer information when a phone or Internet connection is made. Furthermore, the IT administrator can view the data at all times by accessing our web-based Monitoring Center.

The Computrace Monitoring Center, password-protected and accessible only by authorized administrators, will be found in the new Customer Center of www.computrace.com. From the asset data collected by the Tracking Agent, a series of reports can be generated on the fly to give more visibility into the location and status of computers. These reports include PC Readiness, Loss Prevention, and Custom Reports:

  • - PC Readiness Reports allow to better plan for the rollout of operating systems and software packages by comparing PC assets with a set of minimum hardware requirements. For example, these reports can help plan the migration of a PC population to Windows 2000 by identifying which assets do not meet either Microsoft's requirements or the corporate standards defined by the company.
  • - Loss Prevention Reports enable Absolute's customers to prevent loss by identifying PC location and status information. The authorized user can select a date range and search for PCs that have had a change in user name, PC name, or e-mail address. The reports can also help identify PCs that have not contacted the Computrace Monitoring Center within a certain time period. With these reports, administrators can view complete tracking history on a single or group of local and remote PCs.
  • - Custom Reports, which don't require any programming on the part of the authorized user, give more flexibility in defining search criteria within the simple web interface of the Monitoring Center.

With the addition of PC Asset Tracking, Computrace now becomes an alternative solution for tracking computer inventory. Organizations of all sizes will find Computrace an indispensable tool for accurately tracking all PCs, including out-of-office units, and for easily accessing asset information. Computrace begins shipping with PC Asset Tracking features next month. The list price of Computrace will remain unchanged.
