SAN
JOSE, Calif., Aug. 23, 2000 -- Intel Corporation today awarded four
Innovative PC Recognition Awards to highlight new PC designs that merge
innovation, simplicity and style. At a ceremony held at Intel's Santa
Clara headquarters, Pat Gelsinger, vice president and chief technology
officer, Intel Architecture Group, recognized the Daewoo Qrium 663X
and 663N, IBM NetVista X40 and Legend TianXi system.
"Intel is thrilled to recognize these four 'outside the box' personal
computers that exemplify PC simplicity and style," said Gelsinger.
"Technology integration such as USB, integrated networking, and instantly
available power management is making the PC simpler to use. We expect
to see more innovative systems such as these from the entire industry."
First given at Fall 1999 IDF, the Innovative PC Recognition Award showcases
designs that measurably advance the PC in ease of set-up, operation,
expansion, and maintenance. Manufacturers must qualify in all categories
to receive the award. The award's intent is to showcase some of the
great features and technologies that have been incorporated into PC
designs.
IBM
NetVista X40
The IBM NetVista X40 PC delivers a unique user experience based
on its all-in-one style, simple set up and advanced technologies like
plenty of USB and low-profile PCI connections for space savings additions.
Scoring high in innovation, the NetVista X40 takes up less space on
the desktop than standard PCs due to its all-in-one design. Since this
PC has an integrated design, there are far fewer cables that have to
be connected allowing consumers to go from the box to the Internet in
about 10 minutes.
The CPU box is incorporated right into the base of the monitor and the
CD/ROM is tucked out of sight in a bay under the monitor. With a total
of seven USB ports, the NetVista X40 offers unique expansion capabilities
and allows easy plug-in of new devices without having to reboot. The
IBM NetVista X40 ships with an Intel Pentium III processor 667 MHz,
a USB keyboard and mouse, and built-in network software.
Daewoo
Qrium 663X and 663N
The Daewoo Qrium systems have eliminated all old connector ports
-- PS/2, MIDI/game, serial and parallel -- and replaced them with four
USB ports. Two of the ports are located in front for easy walk-up connections
with the other two ports located in back for static devices. The system
ships with a USB keyboard and mouse. One of the most important features
of this PC is its fast boot through an optimized BIOS, and a fast resume
time.
Both the 663X and the 663N are stylistically appealing: small, lightweight,
easy to unpack, and easy to set up. The 663N model is cube-shaped, about
seven inches square and bright yellow. The 663X has an intriguing asymmetry
like a unique pyramid -- definitely not beige or boxy. The Daewoo Qrium
systems ship with an Intel Pentium III processor 600 MHz, integrated
networking and a free online Internet service that is already set up
for first-time users. These PCs are sold in Korea under the Daewoo brand
and in the United States under the Datus Qrium brand.
Legend
TianXi
This PC, which retails only in the People's Republic of China,
includes several innovative features. The Legend TianXi ships with voice-recognition
software for simplified Chinese. It also ships with a hand-writing tablet
for users to enter Chinese characters. As with other winners, the Legend
has eliminated many of the legacy ports. This system has eight USB ports,
of which seven are available on the hub that attaches to the monitor
base for easy access. The Legend PC also comes preloaded with a Chinese
Internet Service Provider.
Consumers have a choice of several color schemes for the monitor, mouse,
keyboard, writing table and chassis. The Legend includes an Intel Pentium
III processor and features instantly-available PC S3 suspend-to-RAM
power management. Instantly available PC S3 allows the PC to attain
a sleep state that draws under five watts of power, while allowing communication
software to remain active. It also complies with the latest U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) Energy Star requirements, which went into effect
June 2000. This means that the PC will draw minimal power while inactive,
yet be able to return to an active state within seconds.
About the Intel Innovative PC Award
The Intel Innovative PC recognition program is designed to call
attention to PCs that advance the state of the art in three key areas:
innovation, simplicity and style. Intel has been working with the PC
industry to make all PCs easier for people to use. The Innovative PC
Award is a way to highlight superior PC designs that measurably advance
PC ease of setup, operation, expansion and maintenance. Although the
award program is currently focused on consumer/home-use PCs, Intel is
looking into expanding the award to include business and mobile platforms.
