Despite Microsoft's efforts at ramping up the excitement level, the fact remains that Windows Me is only a modest upgrade to the ubiquitous platform. Me's most highly touted enhancements are actually mini-app additions such as a new Windows Media Player that offers improved digital audio and video features and a revamped Help/Wizard module that reportedly makes it easier to access the help menus and activate wizards such as the new digital camera import wizard. Some of the other new features sound very much like the ones Microsoft boasted of in the last update, Windows 98 SE. In particular, Microsoft is promoting the "enhanced networking ease of use" of Me--almost the same pitch used in the original Windows 98 release and repeated in the 98 SE launch. As with those previous upgrades, Microsoft has taken at least some of the steam out of the new release by offering some of the new features as downloads free of charge on its website. For instance, the new Windows Media Player is available online free and is compatible with older Windows versions (98, 98SE). In addition to the OEM version, Microsoft's three retail packages include a full install version with a suggested retail of $129, an upgade version (from Windows 9x) for $89, and a "step-up" version that will upgrade only from Windows 98 (and 98 SE) installations. A full, in depth review of Windows Me is in progress and will be posted later on this site. In related news, Iomega Corporation is using the Me launch to boost its market penetration. Striking a deal with National office products supplier OfficeMax, Iomega 100MB USB Zip drives are being offered free ($40, with a $40 mail-in rebate) with purchase of either the full or upgrade versions of Me from OfficeMax.
