Welcome to Digital Media Online's DCC Workstation. I will be your guide to the wonderfully complex world of high-powered systems-the machines necessary to create any and all kinds of digital content. Whether you use a Mac, a PC, or an SGI you need to keep abreast of developments in the workstation market in order to stay on top of the digital content creation heap.

My name is Jacqui Dawson. By vocation, I am a graphic designer and sometime magazine art director. By inclination, I have often found myself immersed in the technology I have used to create. In straddling the art/tech border and being able to write about it, I have found a journalistic niche at various magazines, most notably at Advanstar Communications' PC Graphics & Video, Digital Studio and DCC magazines, as well as for the now-defunct CD-ROM MultiMedia and AmigoTimes magazines.

Over the 10 years I've worked as a designer, I have used a wide variety of software and hardware. In several cases I was also lucky enough (or foolhardy enough) to be on the cutting edge-using beta software and untried techniques to produce magazine pages from my computer-in an age where desktop publishing, let alone digital content creation, had yet to come of age. From my first experience with Interleaf software on an Apollo computer, through time spent publishing from Commodore Amigas, to the more mainstream Mac and PC-based systems I now use-I always kept my curiosity about the equipment under the cover. Granted, in many cases it was a case of learning necessity-pushing deadlines as I figured out how to get my system back up and running. But in every case I was glad I had the chance to learn.

It's that same curiosity which propels me now, in providing you, the reader, with up-to-date news and technical information about the systems you use or plan to purchase. Look upon DCC Workstation as the first place to go when you are looking for advice or info on systems, peripherals, technologies and configurations. We will have a reader feedback forum so you can let others know about your workstation successes and failures. You can also ask advice from other readers and/or the DCC Workstation staff. Feature articles will include reviews, buyer's guides, technology overviews and out-of-the-box experiences at digital studios around the country. So, if you have ideas on what else you would like to see covered here, or if you have a workstation story to tell, talk back to me - jdawson@digitalmedianet.com
