PALO
ALTO, Calif., March 21 -- Combining the glitz and glamour of Hollywood
with the magic of technology, Sun Microsystems (Nasdaq: SUNW) today
announced that the Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliances and enterprise servers
will star as the technology hosts of Hollywood Stock Exchanges (HSX)
Second Annual Academy Awards O2K celebration. Sun will also be the major
technology sponsor for the O2K Village, an interactive, public block
party dedicated to showcasing emerging musical artists and state-of-the-art
computer technology, which will be held on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood
from March 24-March 26.
HSX
recently purchased and plans to set up more than 50 Sun Ray systems,
an E4500 Sun Enterprise server and 50 flat panels throughout the event
and the adjacent VideoTron Cafe, which will be hosted by Sun. Some of
the Sun Ray systems displayed will be dressed to impress in the following
stylish outfits including a Tuxedo, Ruby Red Slippers, Austin Powers,
Sun-Fari, Pink Flamingo and other Hollywood styles.
These Sun Ray enterprise appliances will enable partygoers to instantly
access HSX.com from anywhere throughout the O2K Village with a sleek
smart-card. The Sun Ray systems will also show off their video streaming
capabilities as partygoers can view the Web cast of the O2K party. Through
the HSX site, visitors can view information on celebrities and movies,
purchase items from an online store, and participate in the site's popular
and award-winning interactive gaming experience where participants build
a celebrity "stock" portfolio and compete for prizes.
"We
are excited to be involved in the Hollywood Stock Exchanges O2K event,
and demonstrate that Sun Microsystems is a leading provider of solutions
that address entertainment and media companies' efforts to compete in
the Internet economy," said Stephen McKenna, global sales
director, Entertainment and Media, Sun Microsystems. "We are delivering
the expertise required to enable the entertainment and media industries
to more effectively manage and distribute content to anyone, anywhere,
anytime on a multitude of devices. As a result, entertainment and media
companies are able to quickly leverage their content across various
entertainment and media portals."
"We
want to make HSX's O2K celebration the most technically advanced Oscar
event ever," said David Herman, president, Hollywood Stock
Exchange. "Sun's participation in O2K lets us bring the future of
technology to the streets of Hollywood."
Introduced in September 1999, the Sun Ray 1 enterprise appliance, with
its Sun Hot Desk technology, is an easy-to use, low-cost networked device.
Unlike personal computers which require an operating system and applications
running locally on the desktop, the Sun Ray systems allow for instant
access to existing applications and information resources on the network,
regardless of the underlying platform, including Sun's Solaris Operating
Environment, or Java technology-based, multimedia or Windows NT applications.
