Markham,
Ontario, July 5, 2000 -- Digital Processing Systems Inc. (TSE-DPS) announced
today that Aardman Animations' Merlin Crossingham, a Key Animator
on the CHICKEN RUN feature film currently in release from DreamWorks
and Pathé, will be appearing at the DPS booth at Siggraph 2000 in New
Orleans, showcasing the DPS technology that Aardman used throughout
the production of the film.
Merlin
will be demonstrating the DPS AniMate software running on the dpsReality
hardware, DPS' powerful Studio Digital Disk Recorder (SDDR). DPS AniMate
is a custom software package developed by DPS especially for Oscar-winning
Aardman Animations, and allows stop-frame animators to build up animations
quickly and easily. Aardman used over 35 DPS Perception Video Recorders
(PVR's) with DPS AniMate software as their main video-assist tool during
the production of CHICKEN RUN.
"The
beautiful thing about DPS AniMate is that it is very easy to use, and
with the DPS PVR hardware it combined to make a reliable video-assist
system -- a tool which is essential in the production of a stop motion
film like CHICKEN RUN," said Merlin. "DPS AniMate allowed the
animators to forget about operating the technology, and concentrate
fully on their shots."
An
animated adventure comedy, CHICKEN RUN, directed by Peter Lord and Nick
Park, is the story of a group of chickens who make a desperate bid for
freedom before they can be fried, filleted or fricasseed. Leading the
flock are a British chicken named Ginger and an all-American rooster
named Rocky. Together they prove that chickens are anything but, as
they engage in a daring and spectacular escape. The cast features the
voices of Mel Gibson, Julia Sawalha, Imelda Staunton, Jane Horrocks,
Miranda Richardson and more. The screenplay, by Karey Kirkpatrick and
Jack Rosenthal, is based on an original story by Nick Park and Peter
Lord.
Aardman have over 70 AniMate PVR systems, and have recently acquired
dpsReality-based AniMate systems for future work.
Several other companies, such as Cosgrove Hall Animations in Manchester,
have used AniMate to create animation series for television. Cosgrove
Hall are currently using DPS AniMate systems, exploiting the uncompressed
video available with the dpsReality hardware, in the production of a
new children's series.
DPS
AniMate for the DPS Perception Video Recorder and the DPS Hollywood
Video Recorder is available immediately, with the version for dpsReality
scheduled for release in Q3 2000. An enhanced version, DPS AniMate Assist,
is slated for release near the end of this year.
