MILPITAS,
Calif., Aug. 17, 2000 -- Quantum Corporation's Hard Disk Drive Group
(NYSE:HDD) today announced that its Atlas V 7200 RPM high-end disk drive
offers full support for the Itanium processor, the first of Intel's
upcoming IA-64 processor family.
"The need for reliable performance in storage solutions will only
increase as innovations such as Intel's IA-64 processor family are introduced
into the market," said Pat McGarrah, director of strategic
and technical marketing for Quantum's High-End Storage Division. "We
are very pleased that Intel worked closely with Quantum to optimize
its Atlas V drive to provide outstanding quality, reliability, performance
and capacity for these 64-bit e-business solutions."
The IA-64 family of processors incorporates many features specifically
designed to address the needs of the fast-growing e-business environment.
Quantum's Atlas V drive complements the Itanium processor's ability
to provide extremely large memory capabilities by offering a vast amount
of room to store, deliver and mine data.
"The backbone of the worldwide Internet economy requires powerful
servers to manage the explosion of digital information, powerful workstations
to create digital content and high-performance storage to protect the
huge volumes of data being processed," said Lisa Hambrick,
IA-64 product marketing manager for Intel's Enterprise Platform Group.
"Our upcoming IA-64 processor family will provide these high-end systems
with the capability to manage peak workloads and transactions of multiple
sizes, while maintaining responsiveness, availability and reliability."
The Atlas V drive is an enabler of the Internet generation -- including
participants in e-business -- as its features support an industry-leading
storage density, high reliability, and the fastest 7200 RPM performance
solution.
About Atlas V
The Atlas V went into mass production on January 25, 2000. Its platform
incorporates the industry's lowest acoustics (3.2Bels) and the highest
non-operational (300Gs) and operational (63Gs) shock specifications
for SCSI drives. It also has a fast seek time of 6.3ms, a 29MB/sec maximum
sustained data rate and up to 160MB/sec burst transfer rate. As the
industry's highest density 7200 RPM SCSI drive at 9GB per platter, the
Atlas V provides value, reliability and performance for the high-end
disk drive market.
About Quantum
Founded in 1980, Quantum Corporation (www.quantum.com)
is the world's leading storage supplier in six of the seven markets
it serves: desktop hard disk drives, tape drives, network attached storage
(NAS) appliances, solid state systems, hard disk drive applications
for consumer electronics, and DLTtape automation systems. Quantum is
also a leading supplier of high-end hard disk drives. In 1999 Quantum
became the first Silicon Valley company to issue tracking stock, replacing
its existing common stock with the ticker symbols DSS and HDD, which
track the separate performance of the company's DLT and Storage Systems
and Hard Disk Drive businesses. Both stocks are traded on the New York
Stock Exchange. Selling its products through OEM and distribution channels
worldwide, Quantum's sales for the fiscal year ending March 2000 were
$1.4 billion for Quantum's DLT and Storage Systems Group and $3.3 billion
for Quantum's Hard Disk Drive Group. .
