LAS VEGAS -- Nov. 13, 2000 -- Toshiba America Electronic Components Inc. (TAEC) today announced the expansion of its Color Display Tube (CDT) line-up with the introduction of new Flat Face 17- and 19-inch display tubes. Designated M41 and M46, these new CDTs are designed to offer enhanced legibility and reduced eyestrain due to a reduction in reflective light. The new Flat Face CDTs will utilize a variety of Toshiba Corp.'s (Toshiba) advanced technologies to meet the market demand for tubes that are ergonomically designed, environmentally friendly and economically priced.

The M41 Flat Face CDT utilizes Toshiba's microfilter technology delivering a 30 percent increase in brightness, contrast and vivid color compared to conventional CDTs. The M41 also incorporates the Super High Sensitivity (SHS) system requiring 25 percent less deflection power than that of conventional standard 17-inch CDTs, making it possible to operate at less than 75 watts (W) in monitors, as well meeting PFC Free requirements in Europe. The design of the visual Flat Face of the M41 offers better legibility and reduces eyestrain due to a reduction in reflective light. With the incorporation of a new dynamic focus electron gun, the M41 Flat Face will deliver a sharper, crisper image than with previous CDT designs. Its Impregnated Cathode offers a longer life with high loading capability. The M41 has a compatible base design with STD-neck CDT.

"We saw the need to develop Flat Face tubes due to customer demand for improved front-of-screen performance," said Mike Milostan, senior manager, member of technical staff, Display Devices and Components Business Unit at TAEC. "With monitors being used by people in many different locations in both the home and office, and for extended periods of time, ease of reading is important. Our Flat Face design gives the illusion of looking at a piece of paper rather than a monitor, which can be easier to read."

Toshiba's M46 Flat Face CDT, like the M41, utilizes many Toshiba advanced technologies such as microfilter technology, Impregnated Cathodes and the SHS system. The M46 not only incorporates the visual Flat Face but also a deflection angle of 100 degrees allowing designers to create products that deliver more viewable work space while using less desk space. By incorporating these advanced technologies, Toshiba's M46 is 19 millimeters (mm) shorter than a conventional 17-inch CDT and 63mm shorter than current 19-inch Flat Face tubes. In addition, the M46 uses the Rectangular Cone (RAC) system, along with SHS system, to achieve a 10 percent decrease in deflection power against the standard 17-inch conventional tubes while still delivering sharp, crisp images on the screen. By incorporating an Impregnated Cathode, these CDTs offer longer life with high loading capability. Toshiba's M46 base design is compatible with standard 19-inch tubes.

Toshiba's Flat Face M41 is priced at a slight premium over its M41 microfilter CDT. The M46 Flat Face is priced comparable to that of current high-end CDTs available in the market. Samples and mass production of the M41 are available now. Samples of the M46 are available now with mass production scheduled next month.
